Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who: Even before I began my interviews, when the idea first came to me, I knew that a lot of people would fall outside of my market. In my case, the people that fall out of my market would be over half of the population. 1 in every 6 families suffer from hunger, therefore my market would be tailored to that 16%. While I was doing my interviews, I saw the percentages come to life as I met people that were affected by hunger and were not affected by hunger.  What: One point that I thought of during my interviews, is that although the service i want to create could help hunger, it wont cure it.The wealth gap is still increasing in the US, if the hunger problem were to be cured, the government would need to become more involved.  Why: The needs in my case are different because the outsiders in my situation don't need a service that picks up restaurants leftovers because they have the ability to buy their own food.              ...

Solving The Problem

My idea is to create a food service that, at the end of a restaurants closing hours collects their leftover food that would otherwise be thrown away and delivers it to food pantries. My main goal with this idea isn't for it to be incredibly profitable, but for it instead to make a difference on the community. By incentivizing restaurants to help the community, I can charge a small delivery fee to pay for gas and renting the vehicles. Since I will have no manufacturing costs, I need very little in order to be able to break even.  To get the business started, I would first begin targeting restaurants that embody corporate social responsibility in my area. Gainesville is a difficult area to find restaurants with this motto so I may also have to stop by restaurants in order to speak to owners/managers. Once I have approval, I would stop by the restaurants after hours to pick up their leftover food that would otherwise be thrown away. In the beginning, I would use my own car and pr...

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Opportunity: Restaurants waste roughly 84.3% of usable, good food that could instead be sent to homeless shelters The Who: Lower income to homeless families The What: They are unable to provide themselves and/or their families with food  The Why: The restaurant business has not yet been fully utilized as source to provide food to shelters and organizations through their food waste  Testing the who: In this case, the “who” does not only apply to Americans, but anyone across the country who suffers from hunger. The majority of people who fall under this category are going to range from homeless to lower income. Testing the what: Not all restaurants are to blame for not contributing to this cause, a few restaurants in the US that abide by corporate social responsibility have begun to donate their leftovers. However, a vast majority of restaurants have not acted against this issue. Testing the why: I understand why many restaurants have not yet begun contributing to...

Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic Trend: Businesses growing presence online leads to more freelance writers https://www.thebalance.com/find-a-freelance-writing-job-3515141 I believe that businesses growing in the online world open up many opportunities for people that are computer savvy and allows more people to be employed, higher employment rates lead to economic growth.  The prototypical would be part time writers or people who have been unsuccessful in getting a job and are currently searching for one. Freelance writing mostly appeals to journalism majors/writers, however anyone can do it and be successful at it if they have basic writing skills.  I think this opportunity is relatively easy to exploit because it is accessible to everyone, regardless of education and background, and can be done anywhere regardless of location. I think I saw this as an opportunity because freelance writing is something I have previously researched and has gained my attention because of its accessibility. Anyo...

Identifying Local Opportunities

“Hurricane Irma disrupts countless travel plans” The Sun-Sentinel  http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/166C459D30741550?p=WORLDNEWS In this article, the author is describing the problem that Hurricane Irma is causing for both people and travel agencies. Many companies, such as American Airlines, Norwegian and others, have been forced to change travel days and even cancel certain flights. Also, many tourists in Florida have been suggested to reconsider their vacation days or to move further inland instead of being on the coast of Florida.  The problem the story presented was the difficulty that airline, cruise ships, airports, and hotels were having with changing travel dates. Royal Caribbean was forced to move the dates of a Caribbean cruise to accommodate for the weather and keep tourists safe. The Miami International Airport has also been affected by the hurricane, having to delay or cancel many flights to account for Floridians and tourists...

Forming An Opportunity

I believe there is an unmet need in society in the form of dealing with hunger across the US. Anyone who lives paycheck to paycheck or who can’t even afford groceries has come across this problem and may receive food at homeless shelters. The need for hunger in the US to be addressed has always been a problem and wasn't fully taken into account by the country until Michelle Obama made childhood health a point in the government. To begin to combat hunger across the country, organizations such as The Hunger Project, Food Pantries, and Children’s Hunger Alliance have formed. However, many of these organizations run off donations and cannot solve the problem for world hunger alone. Personally, I believe an untapped gold mine for helping hunger is restaurants. Restaurants could help to tackle this issue by putting their leftover food to good use.  A study by Food Waste Reduction Alliance recorded that 84.3% of unused food in restaurants is thrown away according to Busines...
