Bug List

      1. Microwave timers that have been left on
Why it exists: People use microwaves to heat up their food, but then take their food out before the timer has rung. After removing their food, they do not cancel out the timer, and instead leave the blinking number on the microwave.
2.   Long waits for food at restaurants
Why it exits: Often occurs from restaurants either being under staffed or particularly busy on a night. As a result, the food takes longer to be prepared and come to the table.
3. Holding objects in your hands
Why it exists: A lack of purses, backpacks, or any vessel used to carry objects. As a result, hands become over cluttered and are not as free to use.
4. Cell phone alarms that have been left to keep ringing
Why it exists: People either forget to turn off the alarms or the sound simply doesn’t bother them, so they allow the alarm to keep ringing instead of shutting it off.
5.   Loud vacuum cleaners
Why it exists: The mechanism for sweeping up dirt creates a loud suction noise and engineers have not yet discovered a way to make a vacuum that has a more silent suction noise.
6. Buses that don’t run in front of The Retreat at night
Why it exists: The Retreat is a fairly new apartment complex and not as many buses have created new routes to stop by the complex, as a result, few to none buses run at night, creating a problem for residents who do not own cars.
7. People who are condescending towards others
Why it exists: Results from people who think that they know more than others and do not see how another person’s viewpoint could help to broaden their knowledge or help them view an issue differently.
8.  Memes I don’t understand
Why it exists: People who create the memes have a different sense of humor then I do, or     the content is on a subject I have never seen before.
9.  Wearing sandals when it is raining
Why it exists: Rain occurs when warmer air cools, causing the moisture in the air to condense into a liquid and I happen to be wearing sandals at this time because I didn’t check weather reports or the reports were inaccurate.
10 Teachers who aren’t good at teaching
Why it exists: People who missed their calling in life so they decide to teach instead. Can also result from people who have a hard time connecting with others and conveying their ideas.
11. When two people are already on the Netflix account and one of those two people isn’t me
Why it exists: A Netflix subscription that only allows two viewers to be watching episodes at a time, causing all other waiting viewers to wait until the others log off Netflix.
12.  Waking up early in the mornings
Why it exists: Responsibilities, usually school, that cause me to have to set an alarm for the morning instead of being able to sleep in.
13. Other people who have set their ringtone to be the same as my alarm
Why it exists: Other people like the noises that I hate—because it wakes me up early—enough to set as their ringtone to hear every time someone calls them.
14. When I want to bake but don’t have all the right ingredients
Why it exists: Last minute urges to bake something, causing me to be unprepared and incapable of buying ingredients ahead of time.
15. Lizards that run across the sidewalk when you come by/Squirrels that run across the street when a car comes
Why it exists: Animals trying to find a form of safety, but instead of staying on the side of street where they already are, they run to the other end of the street, causing them to run in front of you.
16.  When my dad wants to watch the news, but I want to watch something else on TV
Why it exists: My dad likes to keep up to date on world issues at the same time that I want to relax and watch something that requires less focus.
17.  When I want to be quiet but my friends want to be loud
Why it exists: I am low on energy at the same time that all my friends have a lot of energy.
18. When I want to be loud but all my friends want to be quiet
Why it exists: I have just gotten an energy burst at the same time that all my friends have lost their energy.
19 Having to put on real clothes in the morning
Why it exists: I am comfortable and warm from the pajamas I was sleeping in and now I have to change out of them.
20. Forgetting to buy things at the store
Why it exists: I forgot to bring my shopping list or I simply did not write a shopping list because I thought I would remember everything and then I didn’t.

Reflection:
When I first began the assignment, I thought I was going to have a more difficult time with it then I ended up having, however, once I got started little pet peeves that will annoy me, no matter how largely or minimally, started coming to me. Sometimes when writing the “Why” portion of things, I would have to refocus my thoughts because I found myself wanting to write why it annoys me and not why it exists. Overall, I found the assignment to be enjoyable and revealing of some things that I had never even thought “bugged” me before.

  1. Elizabeth,
I like how your list had "bugs" from many various aspects of life (I think my list had about 5 or 6 that were related to cars). The "WHY" portion was difficult for me at times, as well, because as you said the easy answer is why the bug bothers you. However, I did not come up with my list as easily as you did because some of the things that really bug me are probably not common and only relate to me.

  2. Hey Elizabeth,
Your bug list was very interesting to read. You picked a lot of bugs that are not usual or typical. This showed that you really took the time to think of actual specific things that personally bug you. I too found this assignment to be very revealing because I had never really thought about that many things that bothered me. I found it interesting to think about the "why" part. It helped me understand the bugs and can also help lead to a solution for diminishing the bugs.

  3. Elizabeth,
Some of your bugs were all very relatable to my own life. You did a great job explaining why they exist but it would have been nice to know a little about why a few things, that were out of the ordinary, bother you also. I believe this assignment also revealed to me things I didn't think actually bugged me, do. Since I have completed the assignment I have been trying to avoid the things I found because now that I know they bug me, they bug me a lot.
