- In this article, the author is describing the problem that Hurricane Irma is causing for both people and travel agencies. Many companies, such as American Airlines, Norwegian and others, have been forced to change travel days and even cancel certain flights. Also, many tourists in Florida have been suggested to reconsider their vacation days or to move further inland instead of being on the coast of Florida.
- The problem the story presented was the difficulty that airline, cruise ships, airports, and hotels were having with changing travel dates. Royal Caribbean was forced to move the dates of a Caribbean cruise to accommodate for the weather and keep tourists safe. The Miami International Airport has also been affected by the hurricane, having to delay or cancel many flights to account for Floridians and tourists trying to leave the state.

- “Let 'dreamers' - live in the US - - their home” The Sun-Sentinel
- http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/166BF35AFA6F3E68?p=WORLDNEWS
- In this article, the author is reacting strongly to Trump’s recent announcement to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The author condones the President’s actions, feeling that many of the undocumented people that came here have built their lives in the US and have earned their keep by working. The ending of DACA could lead to a rise in white supremacy within the country and even shows the the President may support some of the white supremacists groups in the country, such as those that acted in Charlottesville. This message goes against what the US stands for, according to the author America is a safe haven for those who have no where to go.
- The article presented two problems in the story, the first one being the end of DACA and the second one being the President’s support of white supremacy country.
- The ending of DACA affects an age called the “Dreamers”, or undocumented people that came to the US as children and began to study and work here. Without DACA, these people are no longer protected and face deportation.

- In this article, the author discusses a rise in menu prices at many restaurants. Over the past several years, restaurants have begun raising their prices on menus not to accommodate for a rise in grocery prices, but to accommodate for a rise in rent and utility costs. As a result, it has become much more expensive then it used to be to eat out. Additionally, consumers have been shown to not leave the house as frequently as they used to and this has led to a rise in delivery services and online shopping. Due to the popularity, companies who provide delivery services charge extra in order to reap the benefits from customers. In all, the article suggests that people have come to expect the fact that getting food is more expensive than it once was.
- The main problem presented in the article is the rise of food costs. As the article stated, the actual price of groceries has not risen, but, people have begun spending more time at home and looking for ways for their food to be delivered to them. This has led to a rise in costs to accommodate for the delivery fees and so companies can reap the benefits from providing the service.
- This mainly affects lower class people who may not be able to afford the spike in delivery costs as more companies try to get in the market.

- In this article, the author discusses the situation for many Venezuelans in South Florida. For several hours, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz as well as hundreds of Venezuelans came together to discuss what they could do about the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. Many suggested restricting US deliverance of oil to Venezuela in order to get Maduro to agree to US terms on how to treat his people, however it was a stretch. Although no agreement was reached at the meeting, it gave peace to many Venezuelans living in South Florida that their cause was being fought for and they may one day be able to return home.
- The main problem presented in this article results from Venezuela’s ruler Maduro, who has begun to form a dictatorship hold on Venezuela, forcing citizens to flee.
- The main people affected are all of the ones currently living in Venezuela, as well as the ones that fled to the US.
I also had an article about Hurricane Irma in my blog and at least for me it was a little difficult finding stories other than that. I like that you included tourists in your people affected section because I think we tend to forget about tourists planning their vacations months in advance and then being affected by the storms. I also thought your article about dining out and the rising cost of food was interesting. My roommate the other day went to Leonardo's and noticed that their rolls had increased by about 25 cents and she was still pretty upset about that.
ReplyDeleteI'm very impressed that you incorporated so many non-hurricane related articles in a week where headlines were completely dominated by the record breaking hurricane. I'd imagine that you made a concerted effort to include such articles and provide a wider breadth of topics for the blog post. The article about DACA is such an important topic that will tremendously impact many people locally and nationally. In a week where many natural disasters are affecting Americans, it's easy for major policy decisions to be overshadowed in the news. I wonder if perhaps that is the very reason that the Trump administration released the decision in the wake of 2 devastating hurricanes.
ReplyDeleteAlong with Lauren I also had a article in my blog post that I chose to interpret on hurricane Irma, that left me without power for 8 days. The article that immediately grabbed my attention was the article about FIU wanting a hotel on campus, my best friend is one of the starting pitchers for the FIU baseball team. I agree that FIU could use a hotel as the many times I have went to watch my best friend play, I have had to stay up to 30 minutes away from the campus. The conference center I cant speak for. Overall it looks like you did a great job on interpreting these articles and explaining them.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your discussing how the prices of dining are so high. Lately I have been having to change my eating habits in order to budget and eat in an affordable way. I like Chickfila and Chipotle because at both places you can eat for a fair price but even though their are economical places like them there are plenty of restaurants that will break the bank!
