27A – Reading Reflection No. 3

1. What was the general theme or argument of the book?

Throughout his book, Kahneman offers his opinions about human judgement and people’s thought process through research he conducted over decades. The main point of the book is to understand errors that people may make in their judgements or choices. Kahneman ultimately wanted to show the human brain and how it processes information and makes decisions in a new light, he did this by saying the brain forms thoughts in two ways: System 1 and System 2. System 1 happens automatically on a subconscious level. While System 2 is slower and happens consciously. From there, Kahneman then breaks the mind into “heuristics and biases” which explain why people have a difficult time thinking statistically.

2.How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

When creating a product or service it is incredibly important to know your market inside and out. I think in order to be able to properly identify your market it is important to know how they think in order to know how they would perceive tour product or service. Although this book doesn’t explain the thought process of individual markets, it does offer a new perspective on human thought in general which you can then apply to your market. I feel like overall, this book gives a more in depth look at a big concept this class tries to achieving and that is understanding other people.

 3. If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?

Since this book is more psychological, I think a psychological assignment would be the most fitting and one that helps you to understand your market. For this exercise students would need to interview four people that they believe to be in their market and from there they create a map that says what each person hears, sees, feels, thinks, says, does, etc. By doing you can check tht the personality traits the person possesses is actually what you’re trying to market to.

 4. What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

I think the most interesting thing I pulled from the book was splitting thought processes into two Systems. Normally people don’t think of their thought processes occurring separately so I thought that by separating them you make people more aware of what system they are in when they make a decision. This can ultimately help people to make better decisions and pinpoint where their more negative habits come from.

Comments

  1. I thought that your exercise idea for the class was an interesting one. Gathering thoughts and actions as well as what a person senses can help an entrepreneur create better products that captures his or her target market. Also, with regard to the book, I believe I learned about the two thought processing systems in my Psychology class. I think it is cool that some things are controlled by our subconscious, while others we actively have to think about.
